Reel Stand RS-A: High-performance entry into a fully automated transport system

19.05.2021

The pick-up of paper reels for processing in the corrugator is a decisive pacesetter when it comes to speed and efficiency in corrugated board production. More frequent quality changes and the associated shorter cycle times have recently increased the demands on the performance of Reel Stands. Stability and strength must be permanently guaranteed at maximum unwinding speeds of up to 750 m/min.

With the Reel Stand RS-A, BHS Corrugated provides corrugated board manufacturers with a Reel Stand that combines maximum operating speeds and efficiency with a high degree of safety and resilience. It can be used as part of a system environment that ensures extensive automation of the paper reel transport to the line. The automatic reel pick-up ensures a significant reduction in reel change times and aligns the reel to the center of the line or to the running reel with a millimeter accuracy.

In conjunction with the use of the BHS iShuttle, the Reel Stand RS-A enables access to the autonomous transport system BHS iMotion. Software-controlled, this ensures a fully automated material flow via the iLifter and iShuttle transport systems. To ensure precise pick-up, the shuttles can approach the reel stand by means of offset, depending on the paper roll diameter. In this way, damage to the paper core can be avoided during the pick-up process.

Customers of BHS Corrugated can benefit from reduced staffing and increased work safety, for example by avoiding forklift truck traffic in the operating area on the line. The use of iShuttles also eliminates the need to build foundations for underfloor tracks or chains. In future, driving routes can be variably adapted according to requirements and with minimal effort.

Further automation is achieved by using the Roll Verification System (RVS). This reduces the workload and handling errors by automatically ensuring that the paper reels are driven to the designated reel stand for automatic pick-up and unloading.

Another advantage is that the Reel Stand RS-A can be easily integrated into existing corrugator lines. The consistent operational safety is guaranteed by high safety standards (GS certificate). A later investment in the unique iMotion Program from our partner BHS Intralogistics is therefore possible at any time.

Reel Stand RS-A: Further features and advantages

  • The reliable, highly wear-resistant brakes ensure constant web tension when unwinding the paper reel and bring it to a quick stop even during high-speed splicing
  • The lifting cylinders applied on both sides as part of the hydraulic system ensure constant web tension across the entire working width
  • The Reel Stand arms are precisely guided on the support shaft by the V-shaped guides. Automatic pick-up is effected via servo hydraulics. The reel is aligned with millimeter precision to the center of the line or to the operating or drive side of the running reel
  • Due to their good "grip", the expansion chucks of BHS Corrugated ensure the necessary power transmission of the brakes to the paper roll. The ejectors make it easier to unload the remaining roll
  • The electric roll drive reduces the effort required for rewinding the paper after a splice and assists the operator in splice preparation
  • The RS-A also enables the unwinding of split rolls
